.Abstract
Forensic odontology plays a crucial role in forensic investigations, particularly in cases involving human identification.
Orthodontic records, comprising dental casts, radiographs, and photographs, have emerged as valuable sources of
informa????on for forensic odontologists; they offer unique dental characteris????cs that aid in the iden????fica????on of human
remains. Dental casts provide detailed three-dimensional representa????ons of dental arches and dental occlusion, enabling
comparisons with antemortem records. Radiographs facilitate the iden????fica????on of specific dental features, including root
canal treatments, restora????ons, and anomalies. Photographs capture dis????nct dental and facial features, facilita????ng the
iden????fica????on process. Combining these records with antemortem dental records allows forensic odontologists to establish
posi????ve iden????fica????ons and bring closure to families of the diseased. Addi????onally, orthodon????c records are invaluable in bite
mark analysis, a significant aspect of forensic inves????ga????ons. Dental casts aid in the comparison of bite marks found on
vic????ms to the den????????on of poten????al suspects. Analysis of bite marks involves examining the unique characteris????cs of tooth
shapes, dental alignment, and spacing. Orthodon????c records contribute to accurate bite mark analysis, helping iden????fy the
perpetrator and providing crucial evidence in criminal cases.
Furthermore, orthodon????c records serve as essen????al tools for age es????ma????on, par????cularly in cases involving individuals of
unknown age or minors. Dental development and erup????on pa????erns can be assessed using orthodon????c records, assis????ng
forensic odontologists in es????ma????ng the age of an individual at the ????me of death. This informa????on is par????cularly valuable in
cases where tradi????onal methods of age es????ma????on, such as skeletal examina????on, are not feasible. This review ar????cle
highlights the relevance of orthodon????c records in forensic odontology, emphasizing their contribu????ons to human
iden????fica????on, bite mark analysis, and age es????ma????on.
